Why is a Defined Target Market So Important?

For many of us in business and just starting out, it’s always difficult to narrow down your target market.  Most of the time we have no idea how important it is and some I know feel that it limits them from getting clients.  While this is true, in the bigger picture it just limits you from getting the clients you don’t want.

Having a defined target market allows you to fine tune your marketing message to attract the next new client.  The client you really want.

Think for a moment about your favourite client right now – you know, the client you would clone if you could

Are they male or female?
Do they own a 6-figure business?  What’s their average income?
How old are they?
What industry do they serve?
What values do they have?
Where do they live?
What do they like?

These are all questions that will help you define your target market.  As soon as you know the WHO, you can design your marketing to be focused to attract that ideal client.  Marketing to everyone is essentially marketing to no one.  If you design your marketing to speak to everyone it doesn’t stand out to anyone.  However, when you talk to a specific market you can talk to them, point out their pain points and really speak to them.  Make your message unique and attract the client you want.
